Adobe Premiere Pro Productions - Duplicate Project IDs

  • Updated

Overview

When working in an Adobe Premiere Pro Production, it is expected that all projects use a unique Project ID. The Project ID is not visible to the end-user and is managed internally by Premiere Pro.

If two or more projects in the same Production, have the same Project ID, then Premiere Pro will alert the user and also write a small .txt file to the production folder. This file is called "Duplicate Projects List.txt".

Premiere Pro generates the file when there are duplicate Project IDs and one of these conditions is met:

  • Opening the Production
  • Closing the Production
  • Opening a Project in the Production
  • Closing a Project in the Production

It may also periodically check and generate this file. When multiple workstations encounter this they all try to repeatedly write to precisely the same path and file simultaneously. This triggers the LucidLink conflict resolution mechanism and may result in the "Duplicate Projects List.txt" appearing, disappearing and reappearing repeatedly. This may also lead to an unresolvable conflict and jeopardise the integrity of your local LucidLink caches.

Troubleshooting steps

The error is visible when opening a Production in Premiere Pro, it presents as a red error dialogue and warns you that you have duplicate project IDs in the production.

The purpose of this is to generate the list for you, with the problematic projects, so that they can be manually corrected. Every project in the Production should have a unique Project ID. If it does not, then the project was likely not imported into the Production in the recommended way.

If a Premiere Pro project file is simply duplicated (copy and pasted) at the filesystem level and placed in the production folder, it will have a duplicate Project ID.

Identifying the problematic Projects

If you cannot immediately identify which projects are problematic, we advise having only 1 user open the Production, close all Projects and allow Premiere Pro to generate the "Duplicate Projects List.txt" file. This file will contain a list of problematic projects. You can then re-import them into the Production using the steps above.

  1. Clicking the red "Duplicate IDs" error message will bring you to the error logs in Premiere Pro. You can double-click them to reveal more info.

  2. In here, you will find the path to the "Duplicate Projects List.txt"
  3. You can then open this .txt file via Finder or File Explorer.

Fixing the Project IDs

Option 1: Make a Copy

To correct this, the problematic project should be identified and copies made using the "Make a Copy" function in the Productions panel. Premiere Pro will ensure the Project ID is unique and updated.

After making copies of the projects in this way, you should use the "Move To Trash" option on the problematic projects and clear them from the Production's Trash folder.

Option 2: Add Project to Production

You also have the option to move the project out of the production folder and then import it into the Production using the "Add Project to Production" option from the Production panel in Adobe Premiere Pro.
